Best car rental in Sydney (and the one to avoid)

Renting a car in a high-demand market like Sydney can be confusing, and in this guide, I’m going to break down the differences between local and global players, reveal my top choices for Sydney, and, critically, tell you which major company you should probably avoid.

Global Operators

Let’s start by talking about the global operators, think of names like Avis, Hertz, Europcar, or Sixt. They are the major international players.

These companies are usually located right on-site at the airport, which makes pick-up super straightforward. They often provide newer and more modern cars.

A great bonus is that many are connected to frequent flyer or airline loyalty programs, allowing you to rack up those precious travel miles. They also typically offer extended hours, which is handy for early or late flights.

What is the Catch? Well, they tend to be 10 to 20 per cent more expensive than their local competitors.

Now, a Critical Sydney Tip: Till 2026, due to ongoing construction works at Sydney Domestic Terminals (T2 and T3), all companies (including the global names) currently require customers to take a shuttle bus to an external pick-up location, even if the rental counter is at the airport. Basically, all car rentals are off-site.

Local Providers

These include local operators that you can find when renting a car in Sydney, with possibly other branches around Australia.

They are often cheaper than the global giants. While they might not have the absolute newest cars on the market, they provide great value.

What is the Catch? They are typically off-site. If you book from the airport, they usually offer a free shuttle service to their location, which can add 20 to 30 minutes to your travel time.

So, how do you navigate these options to get the best deal without sacrificing service?

Well, my strategy is to use an aggregator website called DiscoverCars, which I like to call it the “Airbnb of car rentals”. I have been using it for the last 5 years, without any issues. I love it because every car rental company is ranked from five to ten stars based on genuine customer feedback (trust Google Maps up to a point; unfortunately, there are quite a few fake accounts used to enhance their own reviews or penalise competitors)

I always filter my search results for companies rated above eight or nine stars. Then I book the lowest price from this shortlist of the most trusted operators, always making sure to add full insurance for just 8-10 USD or Euro a day, which is a great peace of mind considering the typical excess is above $5,000.

I suggest booking it straight away. Cancellation is typically free of charge up to 24 or 48 hours before pickup.

My Top Sydney Rental Recommendations

Based on flexibility, service, and value, here are the Sydney providers I recommend, plus the one you should approach with caution.

YesDrive (Amazing Service)

The first provider that comes to my mind is YesDrive because they are just awesome, they really offer a service designed to make your journey stress-free, which is what we want as travellers.

Another great feature, which hopefully they will keep offering, is that they provide toll-ready cars, automatically handling any charges on toll-roads without you having to register your own e-tag or worry about fines.

They operate just outside the domestic terminals, and they offer a shuttle bus to both the national and international terminals

No Birds (The Flexible Local Favourite)

Another operator you should check out is No Birds, which is famous even among Sydney travellers.

They are located at the airport and also in the city, which is great if you need to pick up in the city and drop off at the airport (or vice versa).

So far, they are also known to accept debit cards for rentals, although you should expect a higher refundable holding deposit than if using a credit card.

Just a quick reminder that I trust these providers at the time of making this video, which is the end of 2025. But things may change, maybe because of a new owner or new policies.

Sixt (Global Provider with Local Presence)

If you prefer a reliable, well-known international brand, Sixt is a very competitive option.

Sixt operates at Sydney Airport in all terminals, and they also maintain offices in the CBD. This gives you the convenience of choice, similar to No Birds.

As a global provider, they generally offer a newer fleet. They are connected to miles cards, which let you accumulate loyalty points on your booking.

And once again, so far, Sixt is also known to accept debit cards at its airport locations, which is great if you do not have a credit card

The Company I Would Avoid

Now, let’s skip to the provider I would probably not suggest, Budget Car Rental.

While it is one of the major global providers in Sydney, they don’t have a great record in service, including long waiting queues and also upselling full car rental insurance to cover a massive excess (or deductible), ranging from $5,000 to a shocking $7,000 AUD.
